2003 Quilt Show - Opportunity Quilt

Pieced by Jan Fitzhugh,

Machine Quilted by Dixie McClain

Quilt Name:  Plum Pretty

Owner and Maker: Evelyn Speier from Paul, Idaho. The twelve blocks were made as "Block of the Month" from Carleen's Fabrics in Burley.  Evelyn added the center Celtic style floral hand-appliquéd blocks to enlarge the quilt. The quilt  took a 1st place Blue Ribbon at the Twin Falls County Fair.  It was machine-quilted by Gail Anderson. Evelyn is a member of Desert Sage Quilters of Magic Valley.

This patriotic quilt began as a way to route all the negative thoughts and nightmares of September 11th into something positive and helpful for our community. The quilt is being raffled with all the proceeds going to The Valley House, a homeless shelter here in Twin Falls. The raffle donation tickets are $1.00 each.

The project was started by having a "Night Out With Dakota Designs" at Twin Falls Sewing Center. We had a wonderful potluck and embroidered for four hours. There were eighteen ladies that contributed embroidered squares. We have embroidery designs from Viking, Dakota and some free ones from the internet in the finished quilt.

We had the wonderful opportunity to hang our quilt, which we named "Lest We Forget" behind the podium at the opening ceremony of the Twin Falls Olympic Torch celebration. We sold tickets to people from seven different states.

The quilt was designed and constructed by Naomi Ames, Julie Allen and  Joan Anderson. It contains ultra suede appliqué, trapunto, machine embroidery, pieced blocks, and piping within the quilt and next to the binding. We found all the fabric except for the ultra suede at Stitchin' Time.

It has been very exciting to see the wonderful enthusiastic response from everyone that sees the quilt. The response from local businesses to display the quilt and sell tickets has been great.

Our special thanks to Larry and Darla Himple at Twin Falls Sewing Center for donation of supplies and never failing support and encouragement. Also to Liz Mandelkow of Quilted For You for donations and machine quilting.
