Quilt Guild History GEOGRAPHY We are located in South Central Idaho, bordering Nevada and Utah. Our area is known as the "Magic Valley" and consists of 7 counties. We have members in all of these counties, including Nevada. Our "Magic Valley" is larger than some states. It has a wide variety of terrain's, from deep canyons with the beautiful Snake River to high mountains and a lot of high desert in-between. Once water was brought to the desert, it flourished into a major agricultural area and since has developed into a wide diversity of businesses.
HISTORY OF THE DESERT SAGE QUILTERS OF MAGIC VALLEY Founded May 1990 By Edith Stacy, Historian The Guild was organized in the spring of 1990 by a group of women interested in contributing to the growth and knowledge of quilting techniques, pattern history and quilt making. Mimi Steffens and Georgia Hartman got the ball rolling. The organizational meeting was held at KMVT on May 31. Soon, by-laws were drawn up, officers elected, dues set in place---and we were off and running. A newsletter soon followed. Early on, the Workshop plan was established, and beginning with the Mystery Quilt, workshops have been provided every-other-month or so, so far numbering more than 20. A Lending Library was established, and Hazel Schutte was the first Librarian. First Officers included: Mimi Steffen, President Dorothy Shark, Vice President Florence Hanson, Secretary Marge DuBois, Treasurer A Guild quilt was envisioned, and was brought to reality under the guidance of Lorraine Haralson. The Log Cabin pattern was chosen, the colors, American red, white and blue. It was a Total Team effort, with the almost everybody helping with the cutting, sewing, assembly and quilting. A series of quilt block patterns with an Idaho theme were collected, duplicated and given out to Guild members. Some beautiful blocks in the Idaho theme were made and displayed at "Show and Tell. I wonder….Did anybody finish an Idaho quilt? Thanks to Georgia for the idea. In June of 91, a Quilt Show volcano began its first gentle rumblings. To get a handle on quilt show procedures, Dixie arranged a "Mini" quilt show for the Christian Women's Club. That went very well, and gave us the courage to gear up for the BIG ONE, which chaired by Linda & Dorothy, was a great success. To keep things exciting and our fingers nimble, the "Challenge Block" plan was started. Each month, a packet of fabric and instructions leaves us in a spin until the show and tell at the next meeting. Miss DSQ (maker of the favorite block) wears the honorary necklace until deposed by the next winner. A drawing gives some lucky contributor all of the entries. Cherie Meservy was "Boss" of this project for a long time. Along about November of '91, Linda Hitchcock came up with the "Quilts for Comfort" idea, and with the New Year, the project was launched. Mary Holmes easily came up with names of several individuals and organization in great need of warmth and love our quilts could provide. So far, a total of 150 quilts have been made and given through our cooperative efforts. Of course, we always have a Christmas party with lots of fun and food. We've been known to spend the whole day wrapping Christmas gift for Lorraine (no…she didn't GET the presents…we were only helping her out!). Or tying up a storm of Quilts for Comfort", or even just pigging out. And just when everybody gets her weight back down, we have our summer picnic and all fatten up again. Fund raisers have included a fine for not wearing your name tag, white elephant auctions and a raffle, as well as the quilt show and the challenge block charge, which started out at $3.00, and was later reduced to $1.00. A charge is also made for most workshops. Sewing Circles began forming in 1992; groups of 6 or so Guild members get together between Guild meetings to swap ideas, sharpen their skills, and do worthwhile projects. Occasionally, Linda stirs up a "Fabulous Fabric Frolic" and a group goes to Boise or somewhere to terrorize all the fabric shops. More often, a group of Sage "hens" will take off for Sisters, (Oregon) Wells, (Nevada), Salt Lake City, (Utah) or Stanley, (Idaho), or elsewhere for a quilt show. Often, some of our members have quilts entered in these shows. Guild members are often asked to "do" a program for another organization. The Twin Falls and Jerome Public Libraries and various women's clubs have benefited from our willingness to share. The official logo as chosen in September of '92--"the single sage bud set on point, with the name of the guild arced above and below". The official colors are purple, lilac and sage green. A former president, Dorothy Newbry, was a first place winner in the Family Circle Magazine, Family Heritage guilt block contest. Her block was stitched into the Family Heritage quilt and was displayed in New York City! The Quilt Show!! June 11 and 12, 1993. We filled a room at the Twin Falls Presbyterian Church absolutely FULL of beautiful quilts, which about 500 people came to see. Everybody had a job, or two, or three, and every body did it. Dixie McClain was chair, much assisted by Linda Hitchcock, Dorothy Shark, Lorraine Haralson and others, including several husbands! There was a wonderful little Country Store stocked with hand made items. In September of '93, Georgia Hartman took on the job of getting us organized to participate in the Festival of Trees. By December, we had produced enough hand-made ornaments to decorate a quite spectacular tree, which was purchased on opening night by Peter and Amy Toft. While all this has been going on, we managed a continuing quilt display at the Twin Falls Library, show a different quilt every six weeks. The Library staff has been very complimentary, and hope we never stop. - - - - - - - - - - This is a letter that Deana Steel wrote to her mother about a guild Christmas party several years ago. Please enjoy a glimpse into the past. Dear Mother: Recently, the quilting guild that I am a member of had a Christmas tea party. Each of the members were asked to bring a dessert and her favorite tea cup. it was a gala affair at the Governor's Mansion Bed and Breakfast. The roomy Victorian house was decorated with pin bows, ribbons, colored glass balls, and tinsel garland. The dining room table was adorned with platters of crumpets, chocolates, cookies, fruit bars, and candied nuts. On the buffet, neatly arranged, were tea bags and mixes of every kind, even a Quilter's tea. Some weren't even really teas, but warm spiced juices. Silver teapots were filled with steeping water and silver teaspoons were fanned in an arched row, but no cups were set out to drink from. Each woman in attendance had an opportunity to share her story about the teacup she brought. Most of the stories depicted special remembrances in the life of the member. Velda, a senior member, had a gold rimmed cup and saucer trimmed with Christmas scenes. The set had been given to her by her grandmother who in turn had received it from her aunt in the 1800's. Gail had purchased her set while at an auction with a friend. She had never been to an auction before and her friend told her not to bid over $50 for the set of china on the block. When the auctioneer opened the bid at $30, Gail yelled out, "I bid $50!" She got the set. Helen received her cup and saucer when her mother-in-law passed away and the tea sets were divided up amongst the daughters. She felt honored to be included. Mary had a set that grows by one piece each year. After having an exchange student return home to Italy, the student's mother sends Mary a piece of china each Christmas. The matching pieces are hand painted with motifs of lemons and mint leaves. Becky brought the tiniest set. it wasn't large enough to sip from. Someone mentioned that it was definitely meant for 'A Spot of Tea', but it brought to her many memories of her childhood when her father built her a doll house and furnished it piece by piece. I didn't have a pretty gold or silver rimmed cup filled with memories. I had a silly ceramic Christmas mug I got free for purchasing $5.00 in fabric. ------ -------- Original Charter Members Eva Barnes Mary Holmes Linda Hitchcock Marjorie DuBois LaVelda Huber Jackie Last Velda Greenfield Dixie McClain Cheri Meservy Florence Hanson Fay Parrott Hazel Schutte Dorothy Shark Mimi Steffens Patsy Sunderman Helen Walker
